As recorded in the History section, Arnold Goodliffe was a prominent Mason. In Gordon Baker's 'History' we read that the Richard Huish Lodge (No. 8518) was founded at the instigation of Mr. R.H. Junker in September 1975. Baker records 'overwhelming interest' in this development and adds that 'The Old Man', Arnold Goodliffe, would have been delighted to know this. Two small corrections have reached me: Firstly the Lodge dates from 1973, not 1975, and secondly, Mr Junker was the first Master of the Lodge, not its 'instigator'.News of Lodge events sometimes appears in the Gazette and I had squirrelled away a cutting recording the fifth annual carol festival and recital at Christmas 1996 when the proceeds of the raffle and other donations amounting to £672 were sent to the Children's Hospice, South West. (Somerset County Gazette, 3 Jan 1997)
When this entry was written in May 1997 I offered the opportunity of publishing here any Lodge news of general interest to Old Huishers. The Lodge secretary, David Ware (who sent me the above corrections), is also responsible for compiling a history of their first 25 years which is now nearing publication. He tells me that he hopes soon to be in touch with some further Lodge news and perhaps some notes on the Masonic movement in general. Meanwhile, he welcomes any enquiries at (01823) 252933.
