Our congratulations and best wishes to Arthur C. Clarke on becoming a Knight Bachelor, in the Diplomatic Service and Overseas list, for his services to literature, New Year's Honours 1998.The Somerset County Gazette, 26 December 1997, records that he had sent a message of encouragement to his old school on the occasion of his 80th birthday the previous week. He recalled: 'With Mr. Mitford's guidance, I learnt how to turn thoughts into prose... With Bobby Pleass I entered the fascinating and ever changing world of science'.
(Arthur's signature appears, with others, on the card recording the 1951 Annual Dinner of the London Branch).
